Hi! My name is Mary Willson, and I’m a multimedia journalist working at the intersection of community + technology.
I am currently the engagement editor for a hyper local daily digital publication in Asheville N.C., called AVLtoday. We engage with our readers to create community-focused content in a daily newsletter format. (Like a local Skimm).
I was part of the founding team of what is now  6AM City, and led their flagship publication in Greenville S.C., GVLtoday. Today, we have grown to include 25+ employees with publications in 5 cities across the Southeast. Joining a startup on the ground floor has given me experience in creating large-scale strategies + processes, management, and scalability as well as creating diverse content in a fast-paced environment.
Previously, I was with the USA Today Network at the Coloradoan in Fort Collins, Colorado where I attended Colorado State University. I’ve also held internships with Westword, a Voice publication in Denver, United Way of Larimer County, Academy of Hope adult GED school + the Future of Music Coalition in Washington D.C.
I am active with the Online News Association, and have served on the Conference Social Media team for both the 2017 + 2018 conferences; was the youngest member of Leadership Greenville, a selective leadership program; and have taught adult literacy classes for 3 years.
Additionally, I take improv classes with Asheville Improv Collective, am an avid trail runner/hiker, listen to *way* too many podcasts + have an ongoing reading goal.Â
